James manages all aspects of Technology Transfer for the Janelia Farm community, including: innovation relationships, invention disclosures, intellectual property, company collaborations, materials transfer, outsourcing contracts, and non-disclosure/confidentiality agreements. James has a B.S. in chemistry from Centre College, a J.D. from Tulane University Law School and an LLM in Intellectual Property and Media Policy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also trained in Science Policy and Leadership from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
 
Before coming to Janelia, James spent over 20 years in the private and academic sectors, performing product development research for Rhone-Poulenc, heading New Media and Software strategy for the Warner Bros TV show EXTRA -- and then spent 13 years in academic technology transfer at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and most recently the University of Louisville, where he was responsible for starting and building the technology transfer office.   He currently serves on the Board of the BioJudiciary Project non-profit organization and manages several projects and initiatives for the Association of University Technology Managers.  James was drawn to Janelia by JFRC’s genuine commitment to disseminating innovations for the advancement of science and benefit of mankind.
